It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Wes James (AKA the NLE Ninja) has produced a set of nine tutorials wrapped up into a 40 minute video. No FCPX, no Motion, just layers, effects and rendering! Full credit to Wes for continuing with FCP7 whilst everyone around him seems to be kicking out FCPX tutorials. He seems to have hedged his bets slightly with Premiere and Avid ones coming up shortly!

Here's a fast way to preview anything at the position of the playhead. Press the backslash key located immediately above the Return key. Watch how the playhead backs up a few seconds, plays through the current location of the playhead, stops for a few seconds, then resets the playhead to its original position.

Just this morning, I found myself stuck. I had a good corner pin track of a handheld cell phone screen that needed to be replaced, but there was a problem; the visible, trackable object was the hand holding the phone rather than the phone itself, and the hand moved and changed its angle as the shot progressed. Fixing this in MochaAE, where the track was created, was difficult, because Mocha was doing its job correctly.

As expected, metadata is going to be a dominant topic at IBC, whether identified as such, or under the heading of Media Asset Management (MAM), because all media management is done using metadata, which is why I’ve combined them in my Using Metadata For Production and Asset Management day at DV Expo. (Check out my other sessions at DV Expo.)

Most all of the tools we use in post-production are quite full featured. They’ve been updated over many years with features added along the way. Avid Media Composer is one of the most full featured of the non-linear editors out there.

Final Cut Pro X has been controversial because it greatly alters the traditional workflow and eliminates features many editors find essential.

It's been several weeks now since Apple released their new version of Final Cut for the masses. Having seen a demonstration of Premiere Pro CS5.5 in use at a recent video production conference, I was fairly impressed at what I saw. But as we know from even Apple’s NAB demo of Final Cut Pro X, demonstrations are not the real thing.

In this colour correction tutorial, Andrew Devis shows how to use the tools in After Effects both to get excellent colour matching result in After Effects and also to provide information that can be copied into Premiere Pro to more quickly and intuitively achieve better colour matching in Premiere Pro than can easily be achieved with the present set of tool in Premiere Pro (recorded with CS5.5).
