How has technology become so pervasive?

Recently we've started a regular evening walk and, being the kind of guy I am, I wanted to track how far we walked and in what time. Naturally there's an app for that! What struck me though, is that this app tracks position and elevation: a trick that requires tracking four GPS satellites.
