The first film with the current Dolby Digital (5.1) soundtrack was “Batman Returns” in 1992. The 5.1 arrangement has three channels across the front of the screen (left, center, right), two surround channels (left and right) and one channel for low-frequency effects, abbreviated LFE, for the rumbles, gunshots, and explosions.
