The market for solid-state drives has been growing quick for years, and that trend doesn't appear to be changing anytime soon! An analyst over at IHS iSuppli expects global shipment of solid state drives (SSDs) to more than double in 2013. The driving force behind this growth, according him, is “a new generation of lower-cost and more appealing ultrabooks” that will be launching later this year.

LaCie Announces 4TB Blade Runner Drives

LaCie, in collaboration with designer Philippe Starck, have announced the Blade Runner, a 4TB external hard drive with a USB 3.0 interface. LaCie will manufacture only 9,999 of the drives, which now arrive 20 years after the initial collaboration which has become a design hallmark for both LaCie and Starck in the years since.

LaCie is throwing down two more 5big drive enclosures for CES this week. Starting at $1,199.00, the Thunderbolt version boasts up to 20TB capacity and transfer rates that extend to 785MB/sec. Meanwhile, the much less expensive Gig Ethernet NAS version is aimed at small business and starts at just $549. Both look like stellar products, and we’re hoping to get some hands-on time later this week at CES.

Toshiba America has announced new enterprise-grade SATA SSD models that support cryptographic-erase and self-encrypting drive (SED) models; an eSSD and a mobile SATA HDD (PX02AMU and PX03ANU/PX02SMQ and MQ01ABUW). Together, these four new 2.5-inch storage device models give IT system and PC system administrators better tools to help secure sensitive business data.
