“An Evening with Fred Astaire” shines to this day as an example of excellence in early television.  The program was produced in the midst of the turbulence over television's transition from kinescopes to videotape, monochrome to color, and live to recorded.  But NBC, the network that aired it, was working through dilemmas largely of its own making.
