What is freelance like?

Scary. Exciting. Unpredictable. Frustrating. Expensive. Cheap. Boring. Awesome. You can apply any combination of these words and many more to the life of a freelancer. There are obvious upsides and downsides but the one that always comes to the minds of assistant editors is the money factor. Will I make enough money to support myself?
