There can be little doubt that standardized tests are a driving force in American education. From college entrance to kindergarten entrance and everything in-between, it seems that for every problem in education a new assessment has been posed (and derided) as the solution. That said, the mechanism through which testing is supposed to lead to better learning is at best unclear and at worst seriously confused by policymakers and educators alike.
