It's a funny story how I became a cinematographer. I had worked on sets since I was 18 as a PA. I always was a little intimidated and a little irritated by the DPs. They always seemed to be so confident and in control - but sometimes I had the feeling that they were a little too sure of themselves. So when I went to university and started making student films, I always chose the role of DP: I didn’t want to work for one!
