It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Today on Art of the Cut, I’m so happy to be talking to William Goldenberg, ACE about Paul Greengrass’s News of the World. Billy and I have talked before about Paul Greengrass’s 22 July, Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, and Ben Affleck’s Live By Night. Billy’s list of awards is longer than most people’s entire filmography. He [...]Read More...

Many of you have read my recent reviews of two new Zoom audio products, the ZDM-1 dynamic studio microphone and the H8 recorder. Some of you are wondering why I haven’t (yet) reviewed Zoom’s new PodTrak P4 (≈US$200) or PodTrak P8. I haven’t requested those two models so far because (just like a segregated video [...]Read More...

2020 is over - and not a moment too soon. This was a grueling year that somehow managed to pass by both quickly and slowly at the same time. Kollaborate The pandemic meant our users relied on our Kollaborate cloud service even more, so much of the year was spent on infrastructure and making sure we could accommodate the spike in usage. We did however deliver major new features such as folder downloading, heatmaps and transcription improvements. Our self-hosted version of Kollaborate recei...

We detailed how filmmakers should approach work in the midst of COVID-19 and what it means to stay safe on productions during the pandemic using equipment like PPE kits, but such insights are merely about the practical necessities and day-to-day realities for working professionals in production and post. We pulled together a roundtable discussion with [...]Read More...

2020 for me included a half-million words of editing wisdom from some of the best editors and most exciting projects of the year. Not much happening in “theatrical,” but I’m sure we all watched a lot of projects this year on the “small screen.” This is a compilation of the quotes that I post from [...]Read More...

How many misunderstandings occur when someone says (or writes) an inappropriate word or term? How often are people confused by this practice? Does it remind you of the Tower of Babel mentioned in the Bible? In this article, I’ll share five examples of this to cover: 2×4, 24p, 30p, billion and podcast. I’m sure there [...]Read More...

If you use effects in your editing timeline (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t), then you’ve come across Boris FX’s Continuum package at some point. Boris Continuum Complete has dropped the Boris and Complete and now simply refers to the package as Continuum 2021. However, they really need to add the Complete back to the [...]Read More...
