To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

After Effects Hidden Gems Weekly: Write-on

August 24, 2015, 12:22 PM

The Stroke effect in After Effects is a workhorse, but it has one major limitation: It’s width is constant over the entire length of the stroke. You can edit and even animate its Brush Size parameter, but this changes the entire stroke. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could make a stroke become thicker or thinner at select points along its shape? You can: It’s called the Write-on effect.

By Larry Jordan Last week  I had the pleasure of moderating a panel sponsored by KeyCode Media and Sony on “The Future of Post: 4K and HDR.” We spent 90 minutes discussing whether it was time for editors and post facilities to start editing 4K and/or HDR images, and what changes these new formats would require. The panel featured Michael Cioni, president, Light Iron; Mike Whipple, executive director of post, Sony Pictures Entertainment; and Bryan McMahan, senior digital colorist, Mod...

Apple collaborating with YouTubers: To promote wha

August 24, 2015, 12:22 PM

MacRumors reports that Apple is in talks with popular YouTube channels to involve them in a big promotional campaign:  Although their styles don't mesh together, Apple could be creating a new ad campaign, possibly for the upcoming "iPhone 6s" and "iPhone 6s Plus," that centers on creatives from YouTube using the company's new products as the main tools for shooting, editing, and publishing content for their channel. I don’t think MacRumors understands what YouTubers could do f...

If you’re trying to give your footage a nostalgic VHS-style look, After Effects is the perfect program. However, sometimes making footage look the “right kind of bad” is just as hard as making it look good. To make the process easier, we’ve created a free After Effects template to help you create a realistic distorted VHS look. Just follow these easy steps:

5 Rules for Smooth Post without Going Broke

Unfortunately, considerably less time—if any—is given to the grueling hours they’ll spend in pricey editing suites, with equally pricey equipment, putting the damn things together.

Great animation comes from experience. The more you animate, the better you’ll get. Still, there are a lot of helpful things you learn along the way, some of which you discover and immediately think “Why didn’t someone tell me this a long time ago?!”

4DX Cinema: Turning movies into rides

August 24, 2015, 09:14 AM

Judith Allen runs down the pros and cons of adding ‘in-seat’ theme park effects to the cinemagoing experiance: I find myself now living near the UK's first 4DX cinema in Milton Keynes. I went to see Ant-Man to try it out. The effects were actually turned on during the Mission:Impossible Rogue Nation trailer beforehand, which worked quite nicely to acclimatise everyone to it and get the 'surprised' shrieking over and done with before the feature. However, the intensity of a traile...

Cinema 4DX

http://www.jaa-editing.com/blog/cinema-4dx.html

4DX cinema is programmed by a South Korean company, building on the older theme-park style immersive experience (I have memories of an Alien 4D experience at a Disney park in which you could feel the simulated breath on the back of your neck as the speakers in the chair implied it was right behind you), but expanded out to mainstream feature films. The chairs move, and various effects of light, water, fragrance, and air surround the audience in complement to the on-screen action. Having r...
