It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Find out how pre-editing, sound design and working on Avid Media Composer all played a huge role in Gravity for this Oscar nominee.

Let’s discuss edit rooms. That edit rooms are often called edit suites is one of those cute, unnecessary fancy-fications that’s really just a classy way to say “LOOK AT OUR SPECIAL ROOM!” without having to scream. Though when you do say “edit suite” to someone, make sure to slightly raise your eyebrows and squint a bit – that adds what idiots call “the gloss of intrigue.”

Right on the heels of Avid’s news of successful films at BAFTA. The recent rumors of Avid not being able to make the NASDAQ requirements have come true. Avid, a long time industry standard for post production support, including Pro Tools and Media Composer, has been delisted from NASDAQ.

Occasionally when using Final Cut Pro X, we find the need to move and copy Events, Projects, media, and even Libraries. This requires understanding some very basic parameters which I’ll cover in this article. We can manage elements within a Library, across Libraries, between Events, etc. It is a very easy process, once you understand the parameters involved. These are not difficult to grasp, so I’ll walk through things one at a time and logically for you.

Over the years Avid has gone from being a very profitable company, to one that has been, and is still in financial trouble. Their stock has dropped rapidly, and many have lost confidence in a once viable company. Today Avid has restructured their team and the company has a whole in hopes to turn things around. The company continues to be supportive of Hollywood, but many core users have moved on to Adobe Premiere Pro or FCP, and even FCPX.

Not exactly. Avid received a delisting letter from the NASDAQ Stock Market earlier in the week, and while it might seem like the end of the world, this was actually expected. Companies have to maintain certain conditions to stay listed on stock markets, and while Avid was granted a reprieve last September as long as they regained compliance by March, it became clear that the situation would not be resolved in time, and thus they have been delisted from the NASDAQ. So what’s next?

Video editing is a scary thing. Something can go wrong at any time. A hard drive can fail, media goes missing or your NLE can give you crazy errors like the ones below. You can’t tell what these errors even mean so how can you get started trying to solve the problem? Going out on your own as a freelance editor with your own gear is even scarier. There’s no other editor to ask for help and you (probably) have only one computer. Errors need to be solved quickly before they turn int...

Adobe Premiere Pro – Stacked Sequences If you are used to editing in Adobe Premiere Pro or Apple Final Cut Pro “legacy”, then you are familiar with the concept of tabbed sequences. That is, you can have several open sequences, which each appear as a tab in the timeline window. This lets editor work between […]
