To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

After Effects Hidden Gems Weekly: Effect Point Pat

July 27, 2015, 12:31 PM

Whereas some effects process every pixel in a layer more or less evenly (think blurs or color correction), others generate new pixels based around a specific point on a layer (for example, particle systems and lens flares). You can define where that Effect Point is on a layer, and even animate it - but unlike a normal Position path, the path between the keyframed positions for Effect Points are not visible in the Composition panel. This has led more than one After Effects user to assume they...

Before Blackmagic Design bought da Vinci Systems in 2009, they had years of hardware and software product history. Thanks to the Internet Archive, their website from 10 years ago is still preserved.  Included in the archive is a PDF leaflet: From the genius of da Vinci comes Resolve®, the company’s first software-based color correction system Note however:  Resolve, 2K and 2K Plus are registered trademarks of da Vinci Systems, Inc.

Getting the Most Out of Film School

Six months later he’s living above a garage in Culver City, working as a day player wielding a boom mic when he’s lucky, and sweating over how to divide the $75 he’ll make today between rent, ramen and student debt that’s half the size of the production budget. The salt in the kid’s wound? The guy working the camera is his age but skipped film school and now has four more years of industry experience.

There is a Media Composer ingesting bin choice, and I thought I should discuss what I am noticing with timecode frame counting assignment for an Avid Media Composer video track as timecode metadata displayed through-out the Media Composer user-interface.

DaVinci Resolve 12 is an exciting release for Blackmagic Design. The software is now a full blown editing and color grading platform. I’ve been looking forward to this for some time and the wait is over. The free version appears to be in Beta so it might still be a little buggy. Still well worth a test drive just don’t start a paying gig on it today. Here are the system requirements right off the bat. Yes you have to have Yosemite on a Mac.

In today's competitive creative marketplace, a strong skillset and a stunning portfolio simply aren't enough to guarantee your big break. Savvy self-promotion can be the difference between winning your dream design job or struggling to make ends meet.
