To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

How to add realism to CG renders

There was a time, not all that long ago, when it was easy to distinguish between work created in-camera and work that was computer-generated. There were a number of reasons for this, including the fact that technology hadn't quite reached a point that enabled artists to present their visions as they would like, or that possibilities existed but were too time consuming.

VFX Supervisor Paul Linden Interview

Last year when directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were filming The Interview (their directorial follow up to This is The End) in Vancouver, I got to visit the set with a few other reporters. As most of you know from the extremely funny red and green band trailers, James Franco plays a vapid talk show host who, along with his producer Aaron Rapoport (Rogen), lands an interview with Kim Jong-un (Randall Park). But their attempt at hard news gets upended when the CIA asks the duo to assassinate...

What are some of the crazier jobs you had before getting into animation? - I had a number of jobs before getting into 3D Animation. After undergrad I worked at a video store, then became a substitute teacher, worked as a sports and youth sports director at a YMCA, and finally before heading on to pursue my career in animation I was a photo retoucher at a camera store.

Hans Zimmer to Write Batman v Superman Score

Around this time last year, Hans Zimmer was telling press he saw “so many good reasons” not to do the score for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Even after he eventually came around, he admitted that he was struggling to give the new Batman his own sound, distinct from the one he’d created for Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies. But now it looks like he’s come up with a solution for the Batman v Superman score.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  So goes the old proverb. SMPTE Time Code is like that.  While the entire production and post world around it has changed radically, time code has remained virtually the same.

We learned earlier this year that Hans Zimmer planned to follow up his work on Man of Steel and reunite with director Zack Snyder for the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice score. However, Zimmer admitted the unique challenge created “a bit of a problem in [his] head,” as he had to figure out how to approach the new Batman without repeating his work on the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy.

Cruise's Plane Stunt for MI5

One of the 8,000 things my kids are currently obsessed with is the Tom Cruise "Mission: Impossible" franchise. They've seen the franchise completely out of order, because I used "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" to win them over. By far, it's the best of the entire series, and they're already Brad Bird fans because of "The Iron Giant," "The Incredibles," and "Ratatouille," so when I showed it to them, all I had to do was tell them who made it.
