To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The Inner Workings

While title sequences come in all shapes and sizes, it is of course inevitable that similar topics and themes will emerge from the pile. These don't necessarily have to be genre-specific and in fact, their ability to transcend film genres is part of the lasting appeal. Consider the Saul Bass school of graphic animation and the many genres that particular aesthetic has been applied to, from comedies and romances to thrillers and capers. The detail-oriented montage is another example, where t...

It's now no secret that ITV4’s 2014 highlights coverage of the Tour de France was made by a team of editors working on Final Cut Pro X. A production of this scale and quick turnaround had never been tried before on FCPX. Four edit suites with new Mac Pros connected to a 70 TB Xsan. All producing a highlights show on air on ITV4 at 7pm every day for 21 days. And with the Tour starting in the UK in Yorkshire and our output also being live on ITV1 on Saturday and Sunday afternoon to million...

Big companies can't be nimble? Don't tell Sony Pictures Imageworks. They turned around 88 shots for Marvel's instant classic, Guardians of the Galaxy -- plus a complete digital character -- in just two months. VFX Supervisor Pete Travers says it's the fastest they've ever worked on a project like this, and a sterling example of both the creative advantages that come with scale, and the richness of the Marvel multiverse.

More Life for your Mac Pro

I work a lot with a local college’s film production technology program as an advisor, editing instructor and occasionally as an editor on some of their professional productions. It’s a unique program designed to teach hands-on, below-the-line filmmaking skills. The gear has to be current and competitive, because they frequently partner with outside producers to turn out actual (not student) products with a combination of professional and student crews. The department has five Mac Pros th...
