It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

How long did you have to edit the material down to the six girls in the documentary? 12 weeks How did you balance the different perils each girl faces so it didn’t feel less relevant than the others. Each girl’s story was intrinsically different & engaging, the challenge was to allow the narrative beats and [...]

Part 1: Editing an Animatic Part 2: Editing Animation If you've read the previous parts of this series, this is the part which has the least 'editing' involved - and also the stage where most of the raw materials for the action are together and now fully staged and animated - basically the part where for drama, the editor would start. However, because we don't have multiple readings from multiple angles and very little in the way of handles, the creative job's basically over. Howev...

IBC came and went, and left a competitive flurry of product announcements in its wake. Now the dust has settled, I thought it a good time to do a quick round-up of the stuff you probably want to know about, if, like me, you couldn't be there in person.

In drama, it's said that you write a film 3 times: in the script, during filming, and in the edit room.In animation, there's less filming ("performance" being shared between the voice actors and the animators)... but the editing is constant. The bulk of the editing happens at the start with the animatic, to find the structure of the film in order to eliminate as much unnecessary animation as possible - but as additional detail is added, the edit must be revisited again and again. The ea...

They say that behind every great man is a great woman, and it can also be said that behind every great director is a great editor. In the case of Martin Scorsese and Thelma Schoonmaker, both statements are true. Editor Thelma Schoonmaker has cut every film Martin Scorsese has directed since Raging Bull, including his latest masterpiece, the Academy Award-nominated The Wolf of Wall Street, which will be available on Blu-ray and DVD beginning March 25th.
