It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

As a sound engineer and co-owner of Audio for the Arts, Buzz Kemper may be more attuned to sound in film than most. He remembers vividly seeing “Star Wars” as a kid and hearing the sound of a giant Star Destroyer rumbling in the theater speakers.

Michel Chion is a well known voice in film sound theory. A lot of people have heard of, and possibly read, his book Audio Vision. For some reason, The Voice in Cinema is a little less popular. This post isn’t really meant to be about Michel Chion or his books though. We’re focusing on the idea of “voice” this month, and it’s hard to come up with a header image that is relevant.

Databending is an art form where flaws in digital systems are exploited and used for creative purposes. Most popular in Glitch Art circles due to its ability to seriously corrupt image and video files, Databending can also produce sonic artifacts which can be useful to have in your sound library and use as an inspiring platform from which further sound design can begin.

Because of the nature of our work, Dolby has lots of friends in Hollywood and we’re excited for all the winners at this year’s Academy Awards®. But we have to confess to being particularly thrilled to see the many awards bestowed on Gravity and Frozen, two movies that made spectacular use of our Dolby® Atmos™ cinema sound technology.

Getting clean audio on set is easily achievable with the right tools and knowledge, but most filmmakers, shooters, and producers, don’t focus enough on the audio component and as a result the production value of the final product suffers. Personally speaking, it took me a while to truly appreciate the importance of location audio, but when it did finally click for me I started paying just as much (if not more) attention to it than any other element on set.

If you’re a Dropbox user to share or sync audio files, Logic Pro projects, or even more personal documents, you’ve probably seen an email recently about an update to the Dropbox Terms Of Service that will be effective on March 24, 2014.

A lot of great new libraries were released this past month, and a few must-haves are currently on sale. If you’re looking for places to spend your hard earned audio dollars, be sure to review this month’s round up below. And, of course, don’t forget to check out our post on Animal Sound Libraries from just a few days ago for more great suggestions.

Proximity could be called a panning tool, or simply a stereo tool, but perhaps we should just bluntly call it the fader of the future. This free plugin for Logic Pro enables you to psychoacoustically position audio, and lets you manipulate the depth of sounds in a straightforward manner by combining several psychoacoustic phenomena that come into play when you’re mixing audio.
