Article Humour Video Blog Audio Industry News Site News Tutorial Press Release Events

To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

It doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to spot that we haven't posted a new article here apart from the FCPX update for a week. So what is wrong and why has the FCP news feed that's been active for nearly five years been put on pause?

Users of Sony’s PXW-X70 camcorder and Final Cut Pro X can now rejoice, since FCP X 10.2.2 finally brings direct support to the superior XAVC L format, which allows for up to 4:2:2 10-bit 1080p recording (and optionally 4K UHD) with this camera model. If you have been following this telenovela, you know that FCP X has been the tardiest of all popular pro editing software to support this format. However, you must update much more than just FCP X in order to achieve the desired compatibility...

calibrate the workflow to find if instant round-trip of the codec wrapper combo is compatible and any clips that passed the test can reconform, 2 for 1 workflow. I have been using the workflow to tech an Avid online reconform, and/ or clearly see why a clip is not relinking.

Here is how I find the media offline edit location in the Avid sequence within one second when almost every clip & almost every title is online. "Command+F (mac) / CTRL+F (windows)", the Avid Find Tool to the rescue. Press the "Find" button and the Avid automatically takes the user to that offline edit in the sequence. A 42minute online television show sequence can have thousands of video edits and many tracks, this technique moves the blue position indicator to the exact location of the offline...

Last week, I brought up the Andrew Stanton TED Talk from 2012 in the context of a discussion about storytelling. It reminded of how great his presentation was. So great, when I went into the archives to check the series I ran at the time, I had actually taken the time to transcribe the entire 19-minute talk. So for the next two weeks, I will reprise that series from one of the principal figures in the phenomenon which is Pixar Animation Studios.
