It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The HPA Tech Retreat is an annual gathering where film and TV industry folks discuss all manner of technical and business issues. A lot of people believe 12 Years A Slave is the best film yet made about slavery in the United States. That doesn’t make it easy to watch. It also wasn’t easy to edit. “Editing is like a massive, 5,000-piece jigsaw puzzle,” says director Steve McQueen. He’s just arrived from Europe and is relaxing in a suite in a swanky West Hollywood hotel with the film’s editor, Joe Walker.

We have been shooting tapeless now for over a decade but in my experience Producers are still not accounting for media transfer time within the shoot day. With different codecs it’s important that both the crew and the client be on the same page in that regard. Now the crew needs to be aware of what card or drive they are recording to and which one needs to be moved to a client hard drive or backed up. We need to be ready to download the footage at moment’s notice. Read More

Would you like to take on fewer clients and make your video business more profitable at the same time? Who wouldn’t? Some video businesses seem to have a magic touch. They make a lot of money, get to work with the best clients, and they’ve built their reputations as experts. But there are many others—companies that do top-quality work—battling it out for nightmare clients. What separates these companies isn’t always talent or luck. A lot of it has to do with how they position th...

Is “hope” all that remains of the emblematic American dream? In the aftermath of our nation’s financial collapse and the technological and global upheaval of recent decades, one is prompted to ponder this question in watching “RICH HILL.” The documentary portrait of three youths and their families struggling to survive in the mined-out Midwestern town of Rich Hill, Missouri, provides a stark contrast to those idyllic Norman Rockwellian images of small-town, rural America. “RICH HILL...

It’s been awhile since we’ve looked at some Useful Tools for Editors so with this new batch of utilities that have popped up recently let’s have a look. We’ve got quite a few for Final Cut Pro X, a color correction app for those with deep pockets and one that might help with tricky file format conversions.

Stop whatever you are doing and take three minutes to watch this amazing music video from Pomplamoose. We get tired even thinking about the amount of work that went into making it on FCP7! Very clever.
