To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Tascam DR–60DmkII audio recorder: enticing for U

Many readers are familiar with the original Tascam DR–60D recorder, which was less capable with a higher price tag than the new DR–60DmkII. Woody Woodhall of ProVideo Coalition first announced the improved DR–60DmkII in October 2014, which fortunately offers up to 64dB of gain on its microphone preamps. I have already made several recordings with it, from both dynamic and condenser mics, and have plenty to report. Ahead you’ll see what I like, and what I would improve.

2014 is a great year to be a DAW owner. New plug-ins of all sorts keep coming fast and furious. Some are hardware emulations, some are hybrids using existing technology to enhance older paradigms, while some are completely new and unique. And the prices are lower than ever.

This 500 series module makes parallel processing easier than ever – an easy example would be using an LA2A compressor as one input on the Mono Blender, while simultaneously feeding a vocal track into the Mono Blender. Users need only to twiddle the wet/dry ratio.

A Conversation with James Horner

Just like Ray Kinsella, the character played by Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams, a voice (or rather my intuition) led me to create the Association and the James Horner Film Music website.

Contender – Sound Mixer Steven Morrow, Get on Up

The sonic endeavor of Universal's Get on Up was to transport the audience to a live James Brown concert. Maintaining authenticity in every way possible was the goal of director Tate Taylor and his crew, including sound mixer Steven Morrow. Using original James Brown recordings and re-created live performances lensed by Stephen Goldblatt, transporting the movie theater audience to concert venue became possible. Said Morrow, "The director and studio were always really interested in making su...

An unfair yet justifiable mic comparison: AT2005US

I have covered the Audio Technica AT2005USB hybrid microphone (analog XLR + digital USB) in past articles and ebooks, and it has been my chosen studio microphone for my recent podcasts. On the other hand, I recently reviewed the Plantronics .Audio 326 headset microphone with outstanding results. Now, even though it might be considered unfair, I am doing a direct shootout. Ahead are my justifications and test results, including simultaneous recordings through each mic.
