It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

One of the biggest headaches for anyone who works in a creative field that uses high-powered computer systems, such as working on demanding NLE’s or animation programs, is how quickly the technology changes. Unfortunately, as anyone who works in a creative field knows, it’s almost impossible to keep up with those changes.

Instead of writing a long and boring product review, I’m going to try something new with the iPad Pro. I’m pulling a Tim Cook: I’m using it as my main and only machine for a while. I’ll be keeping a diary of how it goes.

You know when you sit down to watch a film and it immediately cements you to your seat with that certain level of awe. It grabs hold of you and saturates your eyes with wonderment while you bravely ignore that acute pain building in your bladder… Director Denis Villeneuve’s film Sicario has that type resonance and that might even be an understatement. The post Contender – Editor Joe Walker, Sicario appeared first on Below the Line.

An update for DaVinci Resolve 12 is now available. Fixes a few things and also adds some new features. Full update info is below. Looks like it now supports OS X 10.11 El Capitan too. I’m impressed with how on top Blackmagic Design is on updating the software and fixing issues. I’m getting comfortable using it as my NLE and really enjoy the powerful grading platform.

Ethics statement: as regular readers will know I always buy my own gear for use in my filmmaking and the EOSHD reviews come off the back of that quite naturally. This is a little bit different as Blackmagic decided to support my endeavours! They sent me a unit for free! I didn’t even ask for one! Whilst I am grateful to them for that, be assured this review is in the usual independent mindset. Full Video Assist specs are at Blackmagic here.

In nonfiction filmmaking, the editor is the sculptor, the script writer and often the savior. They take hours and hours of raw footage and craft a narrative that gives life and resonance to the director’s vision.
