It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

As a filmmaker, David Fincher has the reputation of an extreme perfectionist, so finely attuned to detail that he doesn’t trust anyone else to get even minor secondary shots. That vision earned him an Oscar nomination as the director of "The Social Network" – but what about the guys who have to work with him? While Mr. Fincher is celebrated for doing dozens and dozens of takes , what’s often forgotten is that other people then have to look at each and every one of those takes to put the fi...

I like to do these metaphors from time to time to help people understand what it’s like to be an editor from a job point of view. I also happen to like food so here's my next metaphor:

We originally talked about the concept of starting over in production with a Green field – no established starting points – in episode 11. In this episode we take it a little deeper as Terry and Philip revisit the subject. Another longish show, so put on a render, pull out the snow blower or take a long walk.

"You hang around in the right spot long enough and sometimes you get lucky," says editor Jon Harris about his first opportunity to work with Oscar-winning director, Danny Boyle. He had previously worked on two horror films with 127 Hours producer Christian Colson who introduced him to the director when Chris Dickens, Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire editor, was unavailable to take on the film.

I did a call with Lance Stubblefield (Lost, Detroit 1-8-7) recently for a class I am helping out with and thought it would be good to post here. We’ve talked with Lance on the blog before and people enjoyed reading his answers to their questions. Lance talks about how to take a cut to the next step, television editing workflow amongst other things.

One last goody from the SF SuperMeet of editors and FCP users on January 28th. Two assistants made this rap video, "I the Pro Res Maker" about their work lives. "We’re always making SD, rarely HD," they lamented. And this video is no exception. Feel their pain.

One of the immediately striking things about Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay for "The Social Network" is its assemblage, the manner in which he chose to tell the story with cascading elements of the narrative. And when you bring on a meticulous craftsman like David Fincher to direct a film already detailed in its larval stage, you can bet that the attention to each moving part and how it fits into the whole will be amplified.
