It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

It's now more than a week since the great FCP X "mad dash" began, and the dust is far from settled. Time, I believe, for a useful look at Final Cut Pro history, to see if there are lessons in the past that can help us understand where FCP X might be going.

With the release of Apple's Final Cut Pro X, Cupertino gave film editors something it regards as a pro-level tool. However, many editors disagree. They point to a list of apparently missing features, and now Apple's addressed the situation with an FAQ. But not all editors are satisfied, and a petition asking Apple to change its handling of editing software has collected thousands of signatures.

My email has been filled with such a sense of loss in recent days; a deeply loved member of the family died unexpectedly before their time. It tears my heart to read emails from people who built their lives around something – only suddenly to discover it’s gone. What do you do when the center of your life is missing?

If Final Cut Pro X is still new to you and you are unfamiliar with it you might want to check out this free training which consists of 26 parts. The tutorial contains 2 hours and 39 minutes of video. The practice media is no longer provided so you won't be able to follow along while you edit with the same video clips but it should not matter as you can always use different footage. However let's not forget that this tutorial is totally free so thumbs up for this amazing work!

Apple has responded to all the criticism regarding their new editing application by posting a question and answer section on their website. On the list, the explain everything from importing, to exporting, to media management. I’ve provided the Q and A below: Can I import projects from Final Cut Pro 7 into Final Cut Pro X? Philip Hodgetts (Assisted Editing, Big Brains for Rent, Digital Production Buzz, The Terence and Philip Show), Patrick Inhofer (Fini.TV, Tao of Color), Chris Fenwick (Slice Editorial, One-On-One blog) and I talk about the polarizing launch of Final Cut Pro X. Is this launch one of Apple's biggest debacles or is it the shining path to the future of editing?

If you've got the Adobe CS5.5 suite installed on your system and you run an AJA Kona card, then yesterday's release of the AJA Mac Plug-ins for Adobe CS5.5 Version 9.0.1 might be of interest. I've been particularly interested in this update as I'm wanting to give Premiere Pro more of a role in my edit suite and Apple's FCPX update has accelerated that a bit.

We all know that Final Cut Pro X doesn’t yet support import / export of XML data. And there’s no OMF export out of the box either. Automatic Duck is offering OMF export via their Pro Export FCP. As a test I exported a short OMF sequence out of FCPX and into Adobe Audition.

Perhaps overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the release of Final Cut Pro X is the fact that Apple’s other video editing-friendly technology, Thunderbolt, is finally here. While the port has been shipping on the latest Mac computers, until now there were no currently-shipping RAID storage products compatible with the speedy new interface. On the official Apple store, four products from manufacturer Promise are now available.
