MPSE Sound Show makes a big noise in New York City:

Last Thursday, MPSE brought their acclaimed "Sound Show" series to Manhattan for a packed crowd at SVA's Silas Theater. With the gifted crew responsible for Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" sharing the inspiration for and process behind the film's soundscape, the audience got a seldom seen glimpse inside a completely unique collaboration. "I'm blown away at the level they're working on," sound designer Martin Biehn said over cocktails at the Paramount Pictures' sponsored after-party, "You hear a film, but when you strip away the layers and really start to understand what goes into the process - you hear it in a completely different light." Phil Stockton(Salt, The Departed), Eugene Gearty (Inside Man, Broke Back Mountain) and Tom Fleischman (Angels & Demons, Marley & Me) screened three clips in various stages of sound design, from production audio, the raw and often flawed material they're given, to the ADR and foley tracks, where voices are re-recorded and sounds re-created, to the full mix with music, effects and the final balance of the sound design process. Event co-producer Manhattan Edit Workshop also announced new training courses in Pro Tools 9, the industry standard for film sound design, coming in January 2011. MEWShop owner Josh Apter added, "My first real job in film was a location sound recordist, so I came to all this from an audio perspective. Bringing classes in sound design through Pro Tools has been a goal for years. I can hardly wait for the first class." For more information about future MPSE Sound Shows, check out www.MPSE.org.
