It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

My Mac setup is used for audio production and front-end development. The Mac Pro is a monster of a production machine. I was a Windows user years ago because of financial limitations and because it felt really great to piece together your own machine. I made the switch to Mac when I discovered Core Audio and native aggregate device chaining (back when that mattered) and haven’t turned back ever since.

To me capturing instruments and especially groups of instruments using stereo mic arrays is one of the simplest but most enjoyable parts of the recording process. With the exception of mid-side arrays it is important for all stereo mic arrays to have their gains carefully matched if the stereo image is not to be tilted to the right or left.

One of the most powerful tools filmmakers have to provoke emotion is sound. Any Sound Engineer will tell you that, and there’s a fair bit of evidence to back it up too. It follows then that great film needs great sound to truly engross and move us.

For sharing Logic Pro projects and other audio related files, I’ve been using Wetransfer’s file transfer service for quite some time now. The Amsterdam based service – launched in 2009 – is free up to 2Gb, requires no registration, offers unlimited transfers, and has a beautiful user interface.

When I saw/heard Gravity last year it set me of on an exploration of dialogue panning to such an extent that I experimented with some fairly extreme panning in the film I was working on at the time. My experiment proved to be, well, inconclusive at best. So I went back to Gravity to see just how the panning worked within the context of the film, then decided to look beyond it and discovered some interesting dialogue panning going on in Cars (2006) and Strange Days (1995) as well.

Vulture recently published an extensive accounting of Harvey Weinstein’s Oscar campaign shenanigans, a laundry list of dirty tricks long enough to impress Richard Nixon. Life Is Beautiful’s Robert Benigni won an Oscar after moving to Los Angeles during awards season and schmoozing at industry parties every night for a month. The same year, Weinstein paid $5 million on Shakespeare In Love’s Oscar campaign, more than twice the norm...
