The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced today that it has been working with the USB 3.0 Promoter Group to create a new DisplayPort mode that works in conjunction with USB Type-C. The new mode, dubbed DisplayPort Alternate Mode, could be used to drive monitor resolutions to "4K and beyond," as well as delivering up to 100 watts of power and SuperSpeed USB 3.1 data over a single Type-C cable.
