Why did Apple base Final Cut Pro X on Metadata?

Philip Hodgetts posted on his blog a new article on the Final Cut Pro X and this time he focuses his attention on the reason why Apple decided to base its new Final Cut Pro release on metadata. Better media and metadata management was one of the bullet points in one of the articles he wrote some time ago and Philip feels that better metadata management is a significant part of better media management, and crucially important for the future of automation in post production.
