One of the finer comforts in life is settling in to binge-watch some old sitcoms. Maybe you’ve got some tea. Maybe you’re panini-pressed under a weighted blanket. But one thing’s for sure (or at least, it’s very likely): the title card of your binge-du-jour is probably yellow. Gilligan’s Island? Yellow. Taxi? Yellow. Laverne & Shirley? Cheers? M*A*S*H? Don’t reach for the silk doublet or the overabundant bowl of grapes just yet. Chiaroscuro isn’t that fancy. At its most basic, the term describes the use of high contrast lighting to simulate depth on a 2D surface. The word even contains its own definition: “chiaro” means light, and “oscuro” means dark. The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has selected its nominees in three categories of the 2020 Student Heritage Awards competition. The awards are one of many programs designed by the organization to support a new generation of talent in the early stages of their cinematography careers.#cinematography

Blackmagic Design today announced that it has joined the new Netflix Post Technology Alliance and that DaVinci Resolve, its professional editing, visual effects, motion graphics, color correction and audio post production software, was chosen for three of the alliance’s four technology categories: “Color Grading,” “Editorial” and “IMF & Media Encoding.” Blackmagic Design’s URSA Mini 4.6K and URSA Mini Pro were also chosen in the alliance’s “Camera” category.#blackmagic design#davinci resolve#ursa mini pro

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) has re-appointed Kees van Oostrum to a second term as president of the organization, based on votes at last night’s Board of Governors meeting. The ASC Board also elected its officers for the 2017-2018 term, including: Bill Bennett, John Simmons and Cynthia Pusheck as vice presidents; Levie Isaacks as treasurer; David Darby as secretary; and Isidore Mankofsky as sergeant-at-arms.#cinematography#asc

Choosing a color palette for your film is tricky if you don't know which emotions go with which color. While some are more straightforward than others, like red with passion and danger and blue with sadness and tranquility, colors like purple, yellow, and pink may prove to be a little more tricky to find their emotional connotations.
