To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Why the Living Animation in ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ Works So Well

When animated characters are poorly integrated into live-action environments… you can tell. But it can be difficult to articulate why it looks “off.” Bringing two-dimensional characters to life — not just on the page, (or the computer screen), but in the real world — is a tall creative and technical order. And if certain details get missed, you can sidestep your way into an uncanny valley of sorts. Think Mary Poppins staring through rather than at the dancing cartoon penguins. Or: Cool...

Early Disney Rotoscoping

Here is an early example of live action use for animation at Disney. All human characters in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs relied on rotoscoping, except for the dwarfs. The more realistic a character concept, the more live action footage was used to help the animators get a nuanced performance on to the screen.

Chris Pratt Responds After Pixar’s Onward Scores An Oscar Nomination

Onward, Pixar’s first animated feature of 2020, came out at an unfortunate time. The movie starring Chris Pratt and Tom Holland hit theaters just one week before cinemas around the country closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the movie became the lowest-grossing movie Pixar has seen in the last five years. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a great film. Case in point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated Onward for Best Animated Feature earlier this week.

In a year of strong awards consensus around animated features, this category was unlikely to throw up big surprises — and indeed it didn’t. Pixar’s Soul goes in as the favorite, fresh from its wins at the Golden Globes and many other awards besides. For the first time ever, the studio has two nominated features, the other being the relatively minor Onward.

Why Ratatouille In An Underrated Pixar Classic

March 10, 2021, 02:01 PM

As a fan of animated movies, Pixar has always been at the top of my list of best films. With standouts like Coco, WALL-E, and The Incredibles, the popular animation studio has turned out some awesome hits that deserve all of the praise they received. But there’s one Pixar film that always seems to go under the radar. No, I’m not talking about Cars, considering the marketing behind that is unbelievable. I’m talking about Ratatouille.
