It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The summer blockbuster season may be over, but that doesn’t mean the big VFX houses are slowing down. After a season filled with several standard big-name franchise installments, the fall leads into a just as impressive holiday season as well. Superheroes and action still dominate, but Disney’s foray into live-action CGI-intensive reboots should continue to give inspiration and excitement to animators and effects artists for the next few years.

Let’s face it! There are so many online resources regarding color grading available out there already that it’s quite easy to get lost and feel overwhelmed while searching for the most valuable ones. Unfortunately, it becomes harder and harder, especially for newbie filmmakers and enthusiasts alike just starting out to find the ultimate online resource that provides all the basics of learning DaVinci Resolve 12.5 laid out in a simple and easy to follow manner. It seems that Dubai-based DP, c...

Wondering if you should master in 2K or 4K? The DCP specification has two official resolutions: “2K” and “4K”. The majority of films shown in theatres currently are in 2K. In most cases you should create your DCP to match the resolution of the master version of your film. 2K will be your likely best bet if the file (or videotape) source image is 2048 x 1080 (or less). 4K will be a better option for any native size higher than that.

There's an old story about Fellini that, when asked why there wasn't a great film school in Italy to train the next generation of filmmakers, he responded, "Are you mad? We should be stabbing them in their cribs! They'll take all of our jobs!" Today, the Italian auteur would be unplugging computers and taking a hammer to hard drives, since for the first time at the studio level, artificial intelligence has been involved in editorial decision making.

For those of you who are paying attention to the music recording industry, along with mastering audio for film and video, it is becoming very apparent that mixing and mastering engineers are becoming a rare breed. Where you originally needed million dollar studios to record, mix, and master high quality music is now being replaced with DIYers using laptops and walk-in closets.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is most famous for hosting the Oscars, but the organization also attempts to preserve the history of the motion picture industry—and sort out its technological future. ACES, which you might have heard of recently in the press surrounding Cafe Society, is a technology that's been around for a few years; until recently, it’s been mainly geared towards colorists. However, the Academy is doing a big push to expand ACES' use, from pre-produc...

One of the most important things we've learned from great Soviet filmmakers like Kuleshov, Pudovkin, and Eisenstein is that editing has its own language. The montage theory states that a shot communicates to the audience with its rhythmic and intellectual characteristics, as well as with its relationship with other shots next to it on the timeline (aka juxtaposition). But what about shot duration? Can the length of a shot change the way a scene is understood by an audience? CineFix tries to answ...
