It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Creating your own loops has always been a bit of a niche activity. Programs like GarageBand, Logic Pro, Ableton Live and Reason all come with a vast library of loops right out of the box, and creating your own seemed like a daunting task. However, now that these programs have been mainstream for quite some time we’re all starting to get a bit tired of hearing the same set of loops as background for our favorite reality shows.

God is the holy grail of special effects. Sure, CGI wizards have mastered creating miracles from the diminutive; it’s one thing to make Yoda or Gollum unlikely world beaters.

Human beings are natural storytellers, but that doesn't mean that your great aunt Millie or Dave from Accounting can tell a story like the greatest literary and cinematic minds in history. That's because telling stories is a lot like -- dancing. You've gotta know when to drop it low, baby! In other, less confusing words, you have to know how to build tension, add suspense, as well as flavor -- a little something special, and then know when, where, and how to drop the climax bomb. (Otherwise you'...

What I find most fascinating about the sound of Interstellar isn't the ingenuity of the foley artists — although we all know those guys are rockstars — or the way the sound was mixed, but instead it's the overall philosophy of the film's sound. An existential science fiction film with a budget the size of Kansas seems like the perfect opportunity to go a bit crazy on the sound front. Had he been so inclined, Nolan could have sent his sound team to the bottom of the ocean to collect sounds in...

I’ve always been a inconsistent purchaser of music. I’d like to say I was one of those people who buys a couple of albums a week but in truth I’m not. I know many people who are and I admire them but my purchasing habits have always been sporadic, coming in infrequent clusters rather than a constant stream.

Now that Christopher Nolan has officially nixed complaints about "Interstellar"'s sound mixing — that the loud effects and overbearing score muddle much of the dialogue to an incomprehensible degree — why not enjoy enjoy Hans Zimmer's soundtrack on its own terms?
