It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Evolution is supposed to happen gradually – biologically speaking, a few thousand years is a nice brisk pace for major changes to unfold.

We’re always on the lookout for great technology popping up on Kickstarter, and here’s one that musicians and sound designers are gonna love. It’s called the Mikme, and it’s a small black box that produces high quality sound at the touch of a button.

For event recording, it's good to have emergency sealed headphones, and being extremely portable and cheap, earphones fit the bill. Amazon is touting a selection of Stocking Stuffer Headphones Under $10, and when you land there, you're greeted by "Major Sound with a Minor Price." If you shop for $10 headphones, what can you expect? Certainly better than that list. Happily, some manufacturers have learned something in the last 30 years and make inexpensive products that don't sound half bad.

We talk not of his taste in music (although Black Sabbath and Meshuggah may indeed grace his home stereo), but his audio designs. The latest proof is the company’s new VT-24 Four-Channel Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamplifier.

Musical theorist Michel Chion coined the term "synchresis" to define the forging of picture and sound, the way artistry on both sides of the line blurs into our favorite movie moments. Sound design can manifest and warp reality, but film scoring has its own synchresistic effect, albeit one that's rather bizarre.

With the release of DaVinci Resolve 11, Blackmagic Design has firmly moved into the ranks of nonlinear editing. In addition to a redesigned logo and splash screen, Resolve 11 sports more editorial tools than ever before. Now for the first time it is worthy for consideration as your NLE of choice. I have covered previous […]

The Academy moved beyond recognizing primarily orchestral work when voters rewarded Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' electronic score for The Social Network four years ago. A couple of this year's choices tread even fresher ground: Hans Zimmer's largely pipe organ–based music for Interstellar, and Antonio Sanchez's daringly all-drums Birdman score.

He's been nominated six times and has scored five movies released this year ("Monuments Men," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Godzilla," "The Imitation Game," and "Unbroken"). But the latter two could conceivably land him two noms given their best picture potential.

By Jennifer Walden It’s rare for a director to stop a shoot for the benefit of the sound team, but then again it’s not every day that you have a rare WWII Tiger1 tank on the set… the only operable Tiger1 tank still in existence. Bringing in the real deal tank shows just how important […]The post The sound of ‘Fury’ Part II: Tiger1 Tanks appeared first on postPerspective - Randi Altman's postPerspective.
