To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

15 Scores From Composers Not by Hans Zimmer

Hans Zimmer‘s latest handiwork, the score for Christopher Nolan‘s “Interstellar,” was released last Tuesday. It is, in every crevice of the word’s definition, spectacular. And that’s based on a released soundtrack that doesn’t include the film’s most mind-squishing musical moment: the “Docking” song (also known as “The One That MELTED YOUR FACE”). But not to worry; there’s an Intergallactic Illuminated Starship Asteroid Einstein edition (or something) on the way.

Thanksgiving is just a few days away, but before we dig into the seasonal fowl, let’s digest this year’s other most buzz-worthy winged creature. Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu‘s one-of-a-kind film Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) hit theaters in October and thanks to a healthy expansions, it’s very much still in the conversation. Picking up speed on a weekly basis, i’s a tour de force in acting, direction, and cinematography, all seamed together with one very jazzy sound...

In an ideal world I’d have a ninja-class boom operator with me on all of my documentary shoots, but short of that I usually place a wireless lavaliere on my subjects in order to capture the best dialogue possible while providing then with mobility along with the intimacy of a small crew.

Cymatics is the study of visible sound vibration and shows the transformational nature of sound and matter. Sound guides us and shapes us, yet is an intangible force. We can capture sound in the digital realm where we can see waveforms. But, that only gives us a 2D view.

Cymatics, the study of wave phenomena (often of material media on a vibrating substrate), was pioneered by Swiss scientist Hans Jenny (1904-1972). Though often discussed in the context of "new age" ideas, DIY techies and artists have expanded interest in the phenomena.

A 6-Part Comprehensive Intro to Sound

When we decided to tackle the subject of sound, I knew that to do it justice we had to approach it like building a foundation for a house: building it up brick by brick. For many filmmakers, sound is a mystery blended with bits and pieces of understanding gleamed through practice – that was the way I was before doing the research. That’s a clumsy way to go about learning. If we really want to understand sound and become masters of it, we have to start and the base and build up from there.

... The 4K revolution is proving to be a stumbling block for the animated market, as it not only puts a strain on the limitations of the machines that are currently used in the production, but they also could cause the production teams to run into delays with the time it takes to actually make the movie.

Undoubtedly, audio is one of the most important story telling tools in cinema. Improper use or overuse of sound can dramatically affect the impact of the viewing experience. After the recent release of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, there has been a lot of buzz about the 'mix being muddy'.
