It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The Tree of Life is a free-form, existential journey that captures fleeting moments of life. It primarily focuses on a Texas family in the 1950s, setting up a tension between nature (personified by Brad Pitt's conflicted, talkative father) and grace (personified by Jessica Chastain's peaceful and quiet mother). It's bookended by a present-day segment about the alienation experienced by the eldest son, Jack (Sean Penn), a successful architect haunted by childhood memories. Early on, sparked by

This industry adage is as loathsome as it is ungrammatical. I think both are true: It can be what you know and/or whom you know. And know-how. You can be hired off a resume by strangers who like your work (it's happened to me) or lose work because they've taken on an unskilled nephew (it’s also happened to me).

The other day I was working on a 3D show. A tad bit difficult considering I am in that small percentage of people who can't watch 3D without wanting to puke my guts out. Fortunately for me, I left the edit session with my stomach contents intact and the show finished. Working in 3D is [...]

In February I embarked on a new feature drama by writer/director Desiree Lim. My 5th feature (as editor), The House is an in-depth look at a former investment banker's psychological journey to personal freedom from a sordid past on Wall Street. But as she tries to find solace and solitude in a friend's vacant home [...]

I always remember the Woody Allen line from his movie Crimes and Misdemeanors: "Show business is... worse than dog-eat-dog. It's dog-doesn't-return-other-dog's-phone-calls... It doesn't matter where you are in your career, looking for work is one of the not-so-fun aspects of being an editor.

For the most part, when we go to work, we like what we do. Or, I would hope that we like what we do because that would be a miserable existence going back and forth to the same place not liking what we do. Having said that, each day isn't without its challenges because we [...]
