To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

To 4K or Not to 4K - A PVC Roundtable Discussion

February 28, 2014, 10:42 AM

http://provideocoalition.com/pvcexclusive/story/to...

Various members of the ProVideo Coalition weigh in with their opinions around 4K. Do professionals need to shoot, edit and deliver at 4K because of the perceived benefits? Do consumers want to watch something at 4K because they're really able (or think they're able) to tell the difference between 4K and HD? Or should moving to 4K (and eventually 8K) just be accepted as inevitable?

Apple Mac Pro review

To say it's taken a long time for Apple to launch a redesigned Mac Pro is an understatement. Aside from a minor update in 2012, the old model hadn't changed in nearly four years, lacked many modern technologies such as Thunderbolt and USB 3 and had been discontinued in the UK. People were questioning whether Apple remained committed to the product, since the lion's share of the company's revenue now comes from the iPad, iPhone, and iTunes store.

A Raw Look at the VFX in Hollywood

February 28, 2014, 05:31 AM

You probably all remember the green screen movement that took over twitter last year, right after Rhythm & Hues, the VFX company that pretty much made Life of Pi went on winning an Oscar 11 days after filing for bankruptcy. Everybody was in a bit of a shock: weren’t VFX the thing going on in all blockbusters and top grossing films? (i.e: shouldn’t VFX artist make big bucks?). And how can you win an Oscar and file for bankruptcy the same week?

MPAA response to Pando investigation confirms stre

Last night, the Hollywood Reporter published a rewrite of Pando’s recent scoop about the Motion Picture Association of America. The piece reviews what we originally reported: namely, new MPAA legal filings may have inadvertently helped U.S. visual effects workers in their efforts to shut down foreign government subsidies to MPAA studios. Those filings do this by arguing digital goods should be treated as regular imports under trade law. That would get the studios the copyright protections th...

The annual Consumer Electronics Show, held early in January each year in Las Vegas, is an event I try to attend about every other year. The exhibit floor is huge, spilling out of all four halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center into the ballrooms and private dealer suites of several large hotels in the Read More

Pole Vector Constraints - Pt4

If we can write out the steps we want the computer to do, then all we have to do is figure out how to translate our steps into something the computer can understand. I break down the Locator Method for creating pole vector constraints and outline how we would want to go about tackling this process through a script.

Pole Vector Constraints - Pt3

While this method is a bit more involved than the method shown in Part 2 of this series, it is well worth the time to set it up. I have yet to run into a situation where rotation values were placed on systems I have created. And once the process is scripted out, it really is just a button click to set up.

HPA Tech Retreat 2014 – Day 3

The HPA Tech Retreat is an annual gathering where film and TV industry folks discuss all manner of technical and business issues. It’s the sort of conference where the chap next to you spends his time editing a six-camera show in FCP 7 on his MacBook Air. I’m taking notes during the sessions and posting Read More
