It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Many readers of ProVideo Coalition magazine may recall my recent article Mac Mini w/Thunderbolt: preferred platform for many new editing systems. However, some of the readers had doubts, and one naysayer even dared to comment via LinkedIn: "This is hilarious garbage. No serious editor, in their right mind, would do this."

Learn how to download video from websites that give you permission with Firebug. The limitations are basically the big video sites. Those include ABC, Fox, Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, MTV, etc… Those sites are either streaming or mask the location of the served video. Either way it shouldn’t matter, because you don’t have a right to any of the programs on those sites. This technique works particularly well with swf video players.

In this installment of Photoshop and AE Video Adrenaline, Richard Harrington demonstrates how to combine Photoshop and After Effects to look at a great feature called Content Aware Scale. In Photoshop, you can detect skin tones or choose to protect a selected area from transform, but be able to completely re-scale an image while leaving the selected area unchanged. Richard then brings these concepts into After Effects for video in the next installment of Video Adrenaline for Photoshop...

Most of the time, your video files will only have one timecode track. Sometimes, though, you may need to have the same video clip relate to two different timecodes for instance, the timecode of the video recorded by the camera, and the timecode of an audio track playing off a separate device for a music video. This process of recording on two different devices one for video and one for audio is called double-system recording.

Friday saw the release of Resolve 8.1, an update to the color grading tool that now allows the import and export of FCPX projects. What followed however was a weekend of discovery when editors realised they could use this to swap projects between FCPX and FCP7.

I learned a hard lesson today about Final Cut Pro X after doing some roundtrip testing between FCPX and the newly released Resolve 8. That lesson was to be very careful when using clips that FCPX is referencing in other video applications.
