It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

On August 5 and 6, the American Cinema Editors presented its fourth annual EditFest LA, a stimulating symposium for editors to meet and discuss their work. Introducing the opening evening's panel in Universal Studios’ Hitchcock Theatre, ACE President Randy Roberts, A.C.E., asked for a show of hands from everyone working in the industry. Well over three-quarters of the audience's hands rose—about half editors and half assistant editors—including two members of the Australian Screen Editors....

After Sex Offender is the 2nd story on my editor of the year tape. It’s a general news story I edited in just over an hour. The photographer was invited to follow the Adam Walsh task force as they try and round up as many sex offenders as possible on this day.

I picked movies and mini-series for my judging category for the upcoming 2011 Emmy's. This is the most time-consuming category to judge since you're required to watch the entire show but I wanted to see Mildred Pierce and a few other shows that I'd missed. I'll blog about the show I chose for best editing...

When editor Karen Schmeer was killed in a hit-and-run collision while crossing Broadway on New York's Upper West Side in January 2010, her family, friends and the wider filmmaking community were stunned. A longtime editor of Errol Morris documentaries, including Fast, Cheap an Out of Control and the Academy Award-winning The Fog of War, Schmeer was also the editor of the narrative feature An American Son and Sydney Pollack's Sketches of Frank Gehry. The previous year she'd won the documentary...

In 1959, Les Hendy, ABV2's Senior Cameraman, came to me one day with a proposition. He had been approached to make a short film for a company down the Nepean Highway. He had spoken to John Cameron to get permission. Cameron could not see any reason why it should not be done. He was not...
