It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Surprisingly many job seekers still do not write thank you notes after interviews. A thank you is particularly important after an informational interview. Help yourself stand out from the crowd by thanking those who have taken the time to meet with you.

The Coronation of our new Queen was announced for June 2nd 1953. For months before there were build-up stories. These ranged from dress makers at work on the Queen's robes to the arrival of Commonwealth and Empire troops who would be in the parade. Decorations were going up everywhere and souvenirs of everything were available [...]

I've been talking a lot about sound editing lately and here’s another significant component: silence. It can be very powerful in movies, showing up as a requiem in the middle of a battle, a transition, a snowy day or following a gripping scene with a cacophony of sounds.

As a young man at Movietonews, another of my Sports fixtures was the Epsom Derby. I was recruited each year to run the rushes from the start, across country to an assembly point behind the Grandstand, where dispatch riders whisked them off to the Laboratory at 22 Soho Square. The distance from the start to [...]

I was a film editor for many years. Even when working as a Director, I was still concerned about the editing of each film. What I am about to write is not meant to be a lesson in Film Editing, (I would not dare) it is more like an impression of the process as experienced by myself.

I have a growing library of books sitting on the shelves of my humble little office. I actually wrote a post about them for Iamneedcreative.net which you can find here. I’m self-taught and while a lot of what I know has come from just learning on the job I do find myself constantly coming back [...]
