To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

They may work fine for you. They're not working for me. I've given it a year, at which point I'd promised to trade up, or trade out. After that little brush with doom mentioned in the previous blog entry, one just gets back up, brushes down and moves on.

Often when I come across creative artists there are elements of their work that immediately stand out. They may be great colourists, stunning animators, or incredible editors for example. But when I came across Broken Antler recently, every aspect of the work just blew me away.

The Social Network by David Fincher is not an ordinary movie. Not only it has been shot using the RED One cameras (upgraded with the new 4.5k Mysterium-X sensor) but the RED-shot film also utilized a post-production process similar to what an ordinary user could execute.

ARRI ALEXA post, part 5

Upon my return from NAB, I dove straight into post on a set of regional commercials for Hy-Vee, a Midwest grocer. I’ve worked with this client, agency and director for a number of years and all previous projects had been photographed on 35mm, transferred to Digital Betacam and followed a common, standard definition post workflow. The new spots featured celebrity chef Curtis Stone and instead of film, Director/DP Toby Phillips opted to produce the spots using the ARRI ALEXA.

Did you want some cheese with that whine?

As I undoubtedly have said before, we editors are a whiny lot. I sorta embrace my urban legend reputation because it can serve its purposes. I just have to look like a whine is about to come out and that usually gets things done. Sometimes I just get an eye-roll but those are usually deserved [...]

How has technology become so pervasive?

Recently we've started a regular evening walk and, being the kind of guy I am, I wanted to track how far we walked and in what time. Naturally there's an app for that! What struck me though, is that this app tracks position and elevation: a trick that requires tracking four GPS satellites.

In this second lesson of a complete training series for Adobe's After Effects, we look at working with clips in your composition, as well as learning about clip based effects, and how you will build on these "basic" effects into more complex animations.
