To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The best ProRes codec to use when editing 5D | 7D

February 17, 2011, 09:09 AM

http://theconvergence.co.uk/2011/02/the-best-prore...

I recently completed a grading test in a Baselight suite with footage shot on the Canon 5D and 7D and converted to Apple ProRes. The footage was projected onto a cinema sized screen and I have to say that I was mightily impressed with the results. For some time, I have been in two minds about the best codec to convert my rushes into after reading different recommendations. Some sources say that you should always convert to the...

Editing is story-telling. While we can all agree with that, that sentence isn’t particularly helpful. What editing is actually doing is telling your story by juxtaposing different shots so that your audience sees, hears, and feels what you want them to feel.

This Reader Quicktip comes from Josh Petok. If you’re an Avid Media Composer editor then you know you can load a sequence into the Source monitor and edit that into another timeline (which you can do in Final Cut Pro too but this is an Avid tip). If you’ve ever noticed the totally mixed up video and audio patches that happen after that then read on for an easy fix.

"With all the options in workflow today, it seems no two projects are exactly alike. Just like snowflakes, our projects begin beautiful, shiny, and a unique wonder to behold. But as they slowly drift to their final destination, they seem to just turn into slush, as we leave them behind searching for our next wonderful, pristine, new way."

Today Avid Technology issued a press release outlining the changes and new features in their latest version of the Media Composer software, Avid Media Composer 5.5. Among the new features is one that particularly excites me...and it has been very difficult to keep quiet about this (I’m on the Avid Beta, so I’ve been playing with this for a while). Media Composer 5.5 now works with AJA hardware, specifically, the AJA IO Express. What is major about this announcement...
