It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Phase One has released a new version of Capture One, their photography workflow software. Capture One captures, sorts and edit photos, in a similar way as Lightroom or Aperture, but with a stronger emphasis on a professional audience. Version 6.1 adds support for pressure and eraser functions when using a drawing tablet.

Last year was a wonderful one for 3D. In terms of worldwide and domestic box-office grosses, six of the top-10 movies released in 2010 were in 3D. And by year’s end there were almost two dozen models of integrated 3D cameras and camcorders and literally dozens of models of two-camera 3D rigs.

Singular Software has announced the DualEyes for Mac, just after a short public beta period. DualEyes is a standalone audio/video sync utility. If you prefer recording your video and audio separately, because your device's audio feature leaves a lot to be desired, DualEyes is just for you. It takes video clips with poor native audio and high quality audio recordings and synchronizes them, enabling you to use the footage with almost any video-editing software.

"Final Cut has shown no improvement in years. I’m reaching the conclusion that (Apple) is a company that wants to make iPhones and iPads." -Harry Miller, A.C.E. I hope he is wrong. FCP is not only a great NLE, but it has, hands down, made AVID a better system and company.

As you are probably aware by now, we’re going through our book Creating Motion Graphics with After Effects 5th Edition ("CMG5" for short) and pulling out a few "hidden gems" from each chapter. These will include both essential tips for new users, as well as timesaving gems that experienced users may not be aware existed.

Your goal with your rough cut is to lay down your shots in the order in which you wish to tell your story. Chances are, if you’re producing a narrative, you decided the order of your scenes in pre-production, and you now just need to follow your storyboard as if it were a recipe and assemble the clips accordingly, picking the "best" take for each scene. Many documentaries "write themselves," as the characters describe the subject matter. Either way, in the rough cut...

The rate stretch tool is probably the most fun tool in the Premiere Pro toolbox and can be used in both subtle and obvious ways to play with the timing of your clips - while the razor tool should always be used sparingly and only when no other option will work. In this tutorial, Andrew Devis demonstrates how these tools work to both speed-up parts of a clip as well as slow-down parts of another clip. Andrew also shows how to affect...

Occasionally I will find myself wanting to burn a dvd from a video_ts folder. That is seemingly an easy thing, but if you simply burn the folder onto a data dvd, then you end up with a disc that will sometimes play on a computer, but never on a standalone dvd player. That is the result of the disc formatting. A DVD needs to have UDF formatting, while a data dvd will end up with (probably) HFS+.

Many After Effects users know us for our books Creating Motion Graphics (CMG) and After Effects Apprentice (AEA). CMG is intended as a deep reference for After Effects, while AEA is structured as a series of lessons to help a beginner or part-time user get up to speed more quickly with the key features of the program in a real-world environment.
