To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Review Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve for the Mac

January 18, 2011, 03:27 PM

http://www.studiodaily.com/studiomonthly/reviews/1...

The day before the show floor at NAB 2010 was scheduled to open, word broke that Blackmagic Design was going to be introducing an affordable version of DaVinci Resolve for the Macintosh. That news spread like wildfire through all the electronic communication methods we use today. What was most astounding to everyone was the price: this well-known and regarded color-grading tool, once offered for six figures, was going to be available for a thousand bucks.

Chris Zwar - After Effects power user and occasional PVC contributor - shared on the media-motion.tv After Effects list that Peter Sciretta of /Film had recently compiled the first 12 episodes of Discovery Channel’s Movie Magic documentary series. As it was recorded in the mid-90s, a substantial portion of the effects are "practical" rather than done in the computer.

It has now come up a few times on the FCP forum here at the cow, that the E1 Log and Transfer plug in is a bit faulty when it comes time to restore or move a Canon project to different machines and hard drives.

I noticed a thread on the Avid-L2 about file-based delivery, specifically in this case it was NBC wanting XDCAM file delivery (MXF 50Mb/s HD files) – Bourke from Videotoolshed offered some great information about using Avid’s Export to Device function to get an XDCAM-format MXF file suitable for delivery.

Lightworks editing software is free and...

http://www.mikejones.tv/journal/2011/1/17/lightwor...

I suspect it’s fair to say that there’s a huge swathe of filmmakers (in the broadest sense of those making creative screen content) under the age 30 who, if asked to name the significant professional editing systems of the post-production world would struggle to name anything beyond Final Cut Pro and Avid (and in a great many cases they will know the later in name only). This of course is in spite of the fact that there are a...

OK– so this first article is already a few months old & parts are outdated. And I’ve found a number of pros & cons on the ACTUAL release date of FC Studio 4. The second article is more recent, with a better estimate on a release date. But I’ll let you be the judge & jury...

Google political move stifles web distribution

January 16, 2011, 01:07 PM

http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/atepper/sto...

In case you didn’t hear yet, Google recently announced the elimination of support for H.264 in HTML5 video in its popular Chrome web browser within the next few months, in favor of WebM (VP8) and Theora video c??decs. Despite Google’s official justifications for the move in the name of openness, many analysts (including myself) see this as a political move against Apple, and even hypocritical since the Chrome browser has contained (and will continue to contain) an embedded Flash player.
