To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

XDCAM Vs. ProRES

Yeah, I know, I know. I already knew this, and I have told many MANY other people that they should edit XDCAM as ProRes...but I thought that I’d just save a LITTLE time with these quick promos I am cutting and keep them as XDCAM, but render them out of Color as ProRes. I did a small test and it worked.

The new FCS Maintenance Pack Network Admin will allow a system administrator perform the tasks and functions of the maintenance pack remotely. A full rundown of the tool was posted on the Digital Rebellion site just over a week ago.

Avid Media Composer/Matrox

I thought for the last article I'm writing on Media Composer 5, I would do something a little different. Since Avid made the decision to support Matrox's MXO2 mini as a way for editors to monitor external video, I thought that I would do a review of it.

Cost of Editing Technology

Five years ago I set up an edit suite in a client's office. Brand new shinyG5, flat-screen monitors, FireWire deck, all state-of-the-art, top-of-the-line. This week I set up an edit suite once again, for the same client in the same office. This time it was a new shiny 8-core Nehalem, 2.26, nice large monitors, drives to install, Final Cut Pro to upgrade.

Don't Make Your Clients Cry

Don’t make your clients cry Not a good situation when your behavior as the editor causes a client to burst into tears. That’s what happened recently on a job. I was in charge of an edit for a major company, during a training day which involved their workers gathering into teams to complete a project...

Starting With Compressor

Here is a post for getting started with Compressor. In most cases, you have the software and have no idea what it does or how it could save you a lot of time or you just never learned it. That’s okay. I am surprised how many people use Final Cut Studio, but don’t take advantage of this huge timesaver. The best part about FCP7, to me, is that you can render using compressor in the background while you continue to edit in Final Cut Pro.

Avid Screencast 36 - AMA Red & Quicktime

With Media Composer 5, you can access Quicktime and R3D files natively using AMA (provided you have the horsepower). In this episode, I’ll show you how to link to AMA volumes, change the R3D source settings (such as ISO, color temperature etc.) within Media Composer, adjust the formatting and then transcode to DNxHD.
