To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Some of the most stunning recent digital hair and fur work on film - think Caesar, Maurice and hundreds of apes in the new Planet of the Apes films, Middle-earth creatures from the Hobbit trilogy, Snowy in Tintin - has come out of Weta Digital, owing in part to the studio’s Barbershop hair groom system. The toolset is receiving a Sci-tech Award, and fxguide spoke to the award recipients about how Barbershop is used and was developed at Weta Digital.

I Screen, You Screen, We All Screen for Green Scre

What did you do last week? I mercilessly tore my living room apart and temporarily transformed it into a green screen (a.k.a. “chroma key”) studio in which I directed a short comedy called 2084. For as long as I can remember, my friends and I have joked about shooting 2084 on a massive soundstage with high-end gear and a huge crew — total overkill for this very silly, 3-minute short. Well, after ten years of that not happening, we finally decided to shoot 2084 with a tiny crew (four of us)...

The submarine movie is a staple of cinema. You might even say it’s a classic sub-genre, with films like Run Silent, Run Deep, The Hunt for Red October, The Enemy Below and Das Boot ensuring its continuing appeal over the years.

Crafting the VFX of Unbroken

For ILM visual effects supervisor Bill George, Angelina’s Jolie’s Unbroken proved to be chance to implement cutting-edge effects work in a story-driven tale. The film required complex plane battles, crashes, environments, crowd extensions and even sharks to help tell the story of bombadier Louis ‘Louie’ Zamperini imprisonment in a Japanese POW camp after his B-24 Liberator crew crash in the South Pacific.

IF YOU BUILD IT, WILL THE AUDIENCE COME?

The use of practical effects is a somewhat lost art in traditional filmmaking these days. Computer rendered effects are often far cheaper to source and don’t require set or crew time. But does the technological advancement in visual effects and its prolific use in cinema, come with a cost to the magic of movies?
