It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell
Aotg.com Founder

Call me slow, but I finally watched Steve Jobs’ iPad keynote last night (it’s now available on Apple’s home page — or here). The iPad looks like it’ll be a very nice way to watch movies or read digital books, and Jobs offered a typically masterful demo of those capabilities.

I am currently in the "rough cut" phase of my latest show. And this, to me, is the most difficult part. This is where I need to make something out of nothing. Well, not NOTHING, as there is a lot of stuff there that you use. But this is the part of the phase that I need to look at ALL of my somethings, and cull it down and string it out and arrange it in a way to tell a good story.

Bill Warnewr is the man who had the vision, he's the man who made this happen. In this, the first of a five part series, Bill explains the frustration he felt at the linear editing process in a tape-based world and how he, turned this frustration to find a solution to the problem. As a result the world of editing has never been the same. Where once tape-based suites and film cutting rooms dominated, now the electronic non-linear way has become the accepted process.

I played around with the new Canon EOS Movie Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro this morning and I noticed a few other odds and ends after some discussion about the tool with folks on Twitter. Canon has a very detailed information page of their own which is helpful as well. If you haven’t downloaded yet then you can grab the plug-in here.

I started my new job on Tuesday, and this time I find myself in front of an Avid Media Composer. And what’s REALLY cool about it, is that it is the lastest version of Media Composer. When I interviewed I asked what version they were running, and they said MC Adrenaline version 2.7.7. That’s pretty old, but a fine version.

I recently found a weird glitch exporting an animation file from MPEG streamclip 1.9.2. For whatever reason it really bogged down nuke, making the tracker take 4x longer. This didn’t happen with prores, and it didn’t happen with an animation video exported out of compressor. It only bogs down with the animation codec from streamclip.

If you’re a serious Final Cut Pro user then you are probably aware of Digital Rebellion and the tools that they make. Be it their popular Video Footage Calculator, Preference Manager for Final Cut Studio or the recently released FCP Versioner (which I reviewed on PVC) these tools tend not to be flashy but rather very, very useful.
