It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

This issue of Final Cut Pro Insider finds me—well, inside an Apple computer, appropriately enough, specifically to add a Blu-ray drive to a Mac Pro. It’s a journey that many of you will take now that Final Cut Studio can burn Blu-ray Discs, so I thought that I would share the experience. Then I’ll describe how to create a Blu-ray Disc with the new Final Cut Studio. Though both tasks might sound intimidating to the uninitiated, they’re actually so easy that you’ll be wondering if I actu...

While news from the exhibition floor of SIGGRAPH was a little ho-hum, there were a number of excellent panels and presentations upstairs at the convention. One of the most popular was a full day on stereo 3D and how filmmakers are trying to move away from stereo as a gimmick towards it being a true cinema language, just like color and sound. Representatives from Sony, Pixar and Dreamworks discussed the present challenges and strategies, as well as the future of 3D as a medium.

Crimewatch Roadshow, a BBC production, hit the streets of the UK for a series of live shows in June 2009. From car crime and distraction burglary to shop lifting and arson, they looked at everyday crimes that can affect us all. The show featured CCTV appeals, Wanted Faces, interviews with experts, as well as tips on what to do if you are a victim and how to avoid becoming one in the first place. The show focused on a different region of the UK each week - Greater Manchester, South Wales...

I went digging through the ProRes white paper that Apple posted with the release of Final Cut Pro 7, and found some useful info (which I’m betting they won’t mind m highlighting here). Read on.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is one of summer’s guilty pleasures. The follow-up to director Michael Bay’s 2007 blockbuster Transformers, the film has everything that audiences crave in their warm-weather entertainment. "What’s not to love?" says associate editor Calvin Wimmer. "There are giant robots, action, and it’s funny. I just saw the IMAX version. Having that 50-foot screen filled with robots was absolutely amazing."

So many robots! That was one of the big challenges for the editors on Michael Bay's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But thanks to a workflow established on the original Transformers film, the CG robots were a manageable challenge, according to associate editor Calvin Wimmer, who worked with editors Roger Barton, Tom Muldoon, Joel Negron, Paul Rubell and Glen Scantleberry. Wimmer (who also voiced one of the Decepticons) describes his role as a liaison between Bay and the visual effects...
