It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Captured by BBC Studios Natural History Unit and featuring immersive cinematography and emotional storytelling, the docuseries Primates tells the stories of species rarely seen on screen. We checked in with composer Denise Santos of Bleeding Fingers Music to learn more about what went into creating the series’ score and what her favorite scene was. Over the past few days, responses and reactions have come in to the IATSE‘s Monday call to members to vote on October 1 on whether use a Strike Authorization in negotiations with the American Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). This call, in response to AMPTP refusal to respond to IATSE’s latest proposal, has received mostly positive reactions from all parts of the industry.

IATSE’s strike-authorization vote will be getting underway soon. Grips Local 80 said that it will hold its vote from October 1-3, and Prop Local 44 told its members at a virtual town hall Wednesday night that they’d be be voting on the same dates. IATSE has said that all 13 West Coast studio locals will hold their secret ballot votes “simultaneously.”

By Brady Betzel I think 2020 and 2021 have been really difficult, and many of you might feel the same way. That is hard to admit — I guess my pride gets in the way a little — but with three sons under 10 at home, and now at school, it feels like one stress leads to another and another and another. By Karen Moltenbrey Editing commercials might not have all the glitz and glamour of editing a tentpole film, but the work can be just as challenging. An editor has only a small amount of time to tell a story when doing 30- or 60-second spots, so every frame must count. Post editors historically have worked from a facility, whether that is rented space for a specific project or at the studio where they are employed. However, that was pre-COVID. Once the pandemic hit, the “traditional” workflow had to change, and change it did! Independent editors working out of temporary locations on a per-project basis as well as those at studios where they are employed suddenly found themselves — like so many others across the industry — working from their homes. By Karen Moltenbrey When editing longer-form projects, such as a series, time is crucial, not only in adhering to deadlines, but also to ensuring that the final edit runs to the exact minute or frame, especially when airing on network television. More often than not, though, this means finally getting the cut where the creative team wants it to be and then finding teeny areas to tighten up throughout in order to shave off a few seconds overall.
