It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Normally, a Position keyframe in After Effects defines a time, and the position value at that time. This can get unwieldy when you create a complex motion path - such as following a map or maze, or hand-tracing a path with Motion Sketch - and then want to finesse the timing of that path later, as you often have to tweak the timings of a lot of keyframes to create a smooth end result. As it turns out, there’s a little-known function inside After Effects called Roving Keyframes where the t...

So as we tell the story of Alan Bell, ACE and Mark Yoshikawa, ACE editing The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, let's start with the very first edit decision made by director Francis Lawrence: making the third book of Suzanne Collin's written trilogy as two films.

Colourfully dubbed "One Fabulous Fucking Filter," Sarofsky’s opening titles for OFFF Mexico 2015 – a recent iteration of the global “post-digital culture” festival – introduce presenters with a volley of logotypes and stylistic treatments, both sophisticated and simple, classic and clichéd.Title sequence devotees will instantly identify loving homages to greats like Binder, Bass, and Lardani, as well as obvious nods to the work of claymation master Art Clokey, the cut-and-paste ...

Over a year ago, an article was written in response to some very bad journalism and blogging about Final Cut Pro X. It never got published, but in the wake of a similar article surfacing last week, we thought we would dig it out. It was written in October 2014 and has been very slightly updated to reflect the new Apple hardware. Enjoy!

Some of the funniest parts of Saturday Night Live are its commercial and film parodies… these are shot by the show’s film unit and edited by Adam Epstein. These include the show’s Justin Beiber Calvin Klein parody ads, starring Kate McKinnon, or its series of Lincoln car “commercials” with Jim Carrey channeling Matthew McConaughey. Check out his reel here. . Epstein is taking his comedy editing talent to creative editorial boutique P.S. 260, where he will be working on really spo...
