To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

HOW TO BE A GOOD DIRECTOR, ACCORDING TO AN EDITOR

January 27, 2015, 08:43 PM

will say up front: I am a terrible director. I’ve tried it, and I’m not so proud of the results. So why listen to my advice about how to be good at directing fiction projects? Because I’ve edited a few, and I think people in post-production, particularly editors, are in the best position to know what is needed to achieve the best film possible.

Simple though that may sound, it's not particularly easy for aspiring editors to obtain raw footage to cut on their own, nor is it easy to get honest, critical feedback from accomplished editors. A new startup called EditStock is looking to change all of that.

How to Disagree (Without Being a Jerk)

esearch has shown that free form meetings aren’t the most effective way to produce good ideas. Suggestions brought up earlier in the meeting tend to have more influence. Additionally, the negative aspects of an idea often alters our judgement more than the potential upside. And yes, in most meetings the same people do most of the talking.

Last year’s decade-high ratings for Ellen DeGeneres’ Oscars hosting gig could be a very hard act to follow. After mixed attempts to court younger viewers with the likes of Seth MacFarlane, Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, and the disastrous pairing of James Franco and Anne Hathaway, it turned out the most winning formula for the Oscars wasn’t mimicking MTV, but offering family-friendly gags.

Director Tim Burton's Big Eyes paints a quirky picture of the true life relationship between artist Margaret Keane (Amy Adams), whose distinctive portraits of big-eyed children were painted in secret, and her charming, wannabe-artist husband (Christoph Waltz) who took credit for her creations and usurped the phenomenal success that should have been hers.

We have had a number of queries about what to do regarding taking up an Avid Upgrade/Support Plan and so we are going to try and outline the options as we see them. Please be aware that this is our interpretation of what Avid has said in their announcements and on their site, but as an independent site we cannot be definitive, only Avid themselves can do that.

Editing Boyhood

While some film editors may feel as if they’ve spent 12 years cutting a movie, for the editor of “Boyhood,” that actually turned out to be the case. Richard Linklater’s epic yet intimate story of 12 years in the life of a boy named Mason (Ellar Coltrane) required a different way of looking at the editing process for Sandra Adair, who has collaborated with Mr. Linklater as editor on all of his films since 1993’s “Dazed and Confused.”
