It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

These days, technology is eerily quiet. You have complete control over which sounds you hear and when you hear them. If you want to silence your smartphone, all it takes is the flip of a virtual switch or the press of a touchscreen button.

The quote above shows in my opinion in the simplest sense the tremendous complexity of the issue of film sound. Basically: what you see with your eyes is not (necessarily) whatyou get with your ears. It would be utterly foolish to even attempt to cover the entiresubject in one paper. That is therefore not what I set out to do here, although it may seemso at times.

Aspen, CO – Every year, professional and aspiring classical musicians and technical personnel from around the world head to the mountains of Colorado for an eight-week summer intensive retreat at the Aspen Music Festival and School. As the country’s premier classical music program, the festival presents more than 300 performances and music education events, including the Aspen Opera Theater Center (AOTC) program at the historic Wheeler Opera House, where DPA Microphones had its chance to shi...

As no-budget filmmakers, chances are we’re spending a lot of time trying to navigate the placement of powerfully bright lights as we shoot scenes in cramped areas, and having a way to diffuse light is imperative in order to avoid blowing out your shot. There are so many solutions to this issue, like using bounce cards, reflectors, umbrellas, softboxes, ect., but, like most things, these pieces of gear can be a little (or insanely) expensive.

If you’ve seen a movie in a Dolby Atmos® cinema and heard a giant monster’s bellowing roar coming from far above you, or heard the sounds of a battle moving all through the theatre, you’ve probably thought, “I wish I could have this kind of experience at home.”

Back around the time I was first starting out, I remember opening up a demo of Cubase VST (on my trusty PowerMac 6400) and taking a look through the various menus. Everything seemed pretty standard, but something in particular caught my eye, a menu item labeled “Ears Only”.

When it comes to the search for a free and reliable Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) to record music, the Internet has a number of terrible choices to offer. Free applications often come in one of three forms: gutted versions of premium software, fully functional trials of premium software, or standalone programs developed with the financial lure of proliferating malware and useless toolbars.
