It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

When it comes to video editing software, one size does not fit all, and price isn’t always the best feature to base a product’s ability. Some very robust products can cost very little, some products aimed at beginners can be a bit too intense. So where do you begin? Research!

The shower murder scene from Psycho is one of the most memorable scenes in film history. Using groundbreaking editing techniques, Alfred Hitchcock and George Tomasini crafted a truly shocking scene that had people thinking twice about taking a shower.

“Reactionary know how.” That’s what Andrew Maggio described as the key skill of an editor. Andrew was introduced to us by Paul Schnieder from DCC015. He’s worked at Digital Kitchen in Chicago and is a well respected cutter. He tells us about “four walling” as well as his frustration with the “nudge nudge nudge nope” style of editing.

Great documentaries are made, not born, and the place where that happens is in the editing room. A good editor can save a documentary director’s neck; a great one can make a director look like a genius. So, who are these saviors and alchemists and what special storytelling skills do they have that filmmakers can […]

If you follow what has been going on in the world of non-linear editing tools for the past few years you know that Adobe has been working very hard to make Premiere Pro a viable option for every aspect of editorial and post-production. The Adobe Premiere Pro team has been asking questions, listening to editors and improving their product with release after release pretty much ever since CS4 came along. I’m happy to report that with Adobe Premiere Pro CC the tool really has arrived.
